LOL! This is normal for some when you start, you need to disapline your mind and try hard to keep it focused .Sounds like your mind has not been quiet for some time and finds it hard to switch off.... If it wanders allow the thoughts to flow through and pay no attention to them if you can..Then bring you mind back to your meditation technique...Play soft music in the background and try to focus on that! Or use open eye technique and use a candle to focus on.. www.kriyayoga.com/english/on_your_wings/meditation.htmwww.freemeditations.com/Both these sites have wonderful techniques to follow... There are many many forms of meditation too!! You do not have to sit in the lotus postion and go into a semi trance like state to meditate...Gardening is a wonderful form of meditation.. Reading a book.. Drawing or painting.. Music, Singing..... Meditation is being focused on one thing.... Being in the moment.. Being at one with yourself, the Universe and the task at hand.. Whatever you are interested in and you feel relaxed with...DO!! It may not be the trance like meditation.. but doing an activity that helps you focus will help you with the other form of meditation, especially for focusing, and concentration, allowing thoughts to flow without panicking....Train yourself to focus with what you do in everyday life.. try to stop the chatter in your mind by doing things that need all of your attention.. Playing music through the day in the back ground is a great focal point.. Good Luck DB xx

Any music that you find soothing, soothing as in it puts in you in a zone that all you hear is the music... I find earth Drums does it for me.. It is native american Drumming.. Others find lovely Songs of nature with water in the background, some like bells or the pan pipes.. Whale songs are also another sound that does it for me... So it is a personal choice.. what type of music or sounds do you like to float away on? OOh !! another one is from the album Soham by Dao it is called dream moods no 5 I have burnt this song 5 times in a row on a cd.. Fantastic for zoning out.. It is From one of our members Nani.. You may find it in the links area.. Under Nanis Music Dao.. If you cant find it I will try to find a link for you,,, OOH! There is a link in my website under the jukebox in the chat room... Link to website is under my signature.. The jukebox also plays a sample of this song too!! The whole album is so cheap its rude LOL!! Beautiful beautiful Music .. Good luck !!

Nope Rap wont cut it!!
Anything with a story line you need to follow is taking you away from meditating... Maybe soft noises of Nature in the background rather than Music accompanying or music itself.. Have you ever just sat and stared at something?? for ages and then realised what you were doing, some time later? And the whole time you were thinking Nothing or just allowing thoughts to float? If Yes! That is the Zone you need to go!! So any thing with no story line, just something that helps you just zone out..Consciously this time.... Maybe No music and a Candle could be good for you.. Staring into a Candle while you realax your body could be good...

Hey there Newbie, I feel that once you meditate more and more that it really doesn't matter what noise or music is in the background because you'll just focus beyond it anyways. But for someone who doesn't have much experience in meditation then you'll probably come across problems with outside noises that will distract you. Rap, pop, or upbeat music may be your preference and you might find it easier to meditate to it because you like it but you want to focus on slowing down your thought process and the such and music that is slower and softer typically helps with that. But if you have problems with that kind of music I suggest going outside and sitting near a creak, river, waterfall, etc and meditate there. Focusing your thought on the sound of these should help. DB has already given you alot of advice so I'm not sure if I'm putting anything new here. I just noticed that there wasn't anything mentioned about being in nature to meditate but I didn't read those links.

I think thats something very important existenceisadream, how can we forget about the place and situation where meditation was born and arose from: Nature! Very great you`ve said it!
and of course all already given hints are great too. lovejoy, Nani
