If you want a care-free garden that returns every year, I'd stick to plant species that are native to your area, and thrive in most any soil types, as well as attract butterflies; like echinacea, rudbeckia, bee-balm, maybe some lovely liatris, some pasqueflowers for spring(one'a my favs), butterfly weed(asclepias). Though these ones are not native they are very good; lavender, california poppy, butterfly bush(budlea). Maybe some spring bulbs mixed in too, since they are spring ephemeral, they will be out'a the way, when the rest come up.
A few ideas anyways, what type of soil?

How about a Lilac brush? I would grow and did try to, but it's too hot for them here. They do smell wonderful, when they are in bloom. There is another plant that grow good up north and it hads hugh blooms (reds & pinks) and it comes back from the roots every year, but I can't think of the name. They won't grow here either. I do had a butterfly bush and it is very beautiful. It is beginning to bloom now. The butterflies do like.
Spring is so cool. I have a bird that is building it's nest in a small tree that is right outside my window.

I have a lilac bush that when we moved here my neighbors said never bloomed. I watered the heck out of it and it bloomed that first year and every year since! I have lavender and I think the pink and red blooms crazy might be talking about are peonies, I have them also. I go to the Birds and Blooms site and they have a hardiness zone map and good info on plants. Spring comes late to the mountains here my daffodils are just not blooming, lol. Good luck and have fun with your plants, alot of it is trial and error.

Ladybleu, that was the one I was trying to think of. Peonies, I think they are so pretty. I tried growing them here too and they just didn't like the heat. My lilac bush lasted a couple years and it did bloom the first year, but that one year just happened to be a cooler, wetter year was the reason. It was just way too hot that next summer. I do have a Jasmine vine and it smells really great, but don't know if they can grow up north.

Animal...that's what I am going to be doing later on...creating a butterfly garden around a little courtyard in my backyard. We have very hot and humid conditions, sand, and frequent droughts. The local library has a butterfly garden so I know it'll work...lol. As LadyBleu said..."alot of it is trial and error."
Lilac...you should buy whatever you like and think is easy to care for and smells good. I know nothing about plants, but I've learned by trial and error and have been growing vegetables in containers for the last few years. Each year I've corrected the mistakes I made from the year before and learn as I go.

Oh I'm absolutely loving the spring! Its perfect.. We've finally been getting some rain, after a long drought, and the air is so humid, so thick. It is awesome. I haven't cutt my grass though, and I have like a trillion dandilions..er.
Yes Butterfly gardens are totally my fav, I can't wait till we get some more around here, lately I have only spotted a few blues, and some cabbage white, but I'll know they will be around soon!
Yes trial and error.. joyfull learning experiences. There is nothing better for me than planting some seeds or seedings, and watching them mature into full blooming wonders!

That sounds really cool animal. When I lived out in west Texas I could not get anything bought to grow for very long so I went out into the fields and found some pretty wild flowers and and made a rock garden with then and some stones that were everywhere. My husband even found a petrified tree one day and brought the whole thing home to me. I still have some of it. That was over 20 years ago. I hauled that rock tree to Noth Dakota and back to here. It does look nice in my flower beds.

ohh! I love petrified wood! Is it near your bed? Have some fantastic dreams and OBE's if it is, I bet! Though maybe it is too large, but I'd it up anyways.. Hmm though you could always simply direct your attention to it, in its location, as you fall to sleep, or not!

Hmmm.. I'll have to check that out. I have lots of pieces still, some large and some small. Thanks animal. I have never heard of petrified wood helping in that regard and I have had it for over 20 years. ;D
