Healing Sounds A great way to open your chakras is through the use of chanting and sounds. (Thank you Nanni for reminding me!!) This is a technique that has been being used for centuries, by different cultures including buddhists. I am not sure the best position to use eg; sitting, laying down, etc. I've only done this technique once myself, and I was laying down. Although there are many variations to the chants, I found these some of the most popular ones used by Tibetan monks. I emplore you to try these chants and feel the effects on your energy points. If anyone has anything to add please feel free! Thanks.
The most popular chant sound is the OM, drawing out the MMMM for a very long time. Om is considered the universal sound. It is said to make this sound in your throat and feel it in your third eye, with your eyes closed. Although this sound can be felt throughout your body.
Another method= Om ah Hum - Popular method, draw the sounds out for a very long time. Placing emphasis on the underlined parts.
Another method= ‘uh’ as in cup for the first (base) chakra ‘ooo’ as in you for the second (spleen) chakra ‘oh’ as in go for the third (solar plexus) chakra ‘ah’ as in car for the forth (heart) chakra ‘eye’ as in my for the fifth (throat) chakra ‘ay’ as in say for the sixth (third eye) chakra ‘eee’ as in me for the seventh (crown) chakra

Very cool and informative thread Incubus,
okay something to add could be:
if one lays down while chanting it might carry you into sleep quite fast, which is pleasant and healthy, but for experiencing the effect of such chants one appreciates it deeper while sitting, if with crossed legs (which is uncomfortable for me) or just on a chair - thats equal. The main thing is the straight back to let the energy flow freely and the chin shouldnt be raised, but put a bit downwards. Its often said that the neck/throat part is best when you imagine to be a (carful) turtle lol.
Important also, dont press or push the breath while in- or outbreathing, you can take little breaks in between, so you dont get into "hyperventilation" (found no translation).
To make it real easy in the beginning is to get a Cd with sounds and let it run while chanting.
you could imagine colours on the chakras, but please only work on chakras with a teacher or if you have worked on meditation for a long time, thats at least my opinion.
For chant-meditation one doesnt need any teacher or supervisor, cause its a very natural and informal thing.
Thanks again Incubus for putting this thread up, I always forget things like that, only mentioned some of that hidden in between posts, but surely its very worth an own thread and may be interesting and helpful for people who do search direct experience. lgn

Thank yoy nani for adding to this, my knowledge in this is pretty weak. And I always like to learn more, especialy from experienced ones. I know even if I do this while at my computer it gives such a nice feeling, and I can feel the tingling in my chakras. Of course I make sure no one elso is around or I just laugh and feel silly. lol
How come not pratice chakra colours with it? I've personaly always done chakra work from youth, and I know it can give an unpleasent senstations. Just wondering if you've had bad experiances? Thanks.

oh I didnt express it well, I didnt mean not to work with the colours but to be cautious with chakra-work generally - if one just starts to do meditation I meant. But as you have done it for that long of course it doesnt count for you! Do you know the refering colours? They are just from the bottom to the top: red/orange/yellow/green/light-blue/blue/purple. Whereby there is a big question and confusion about the third chakra, I feel. Most call it the Soalr Plexus, but also its called the Dantien/Hara, right under the navel. In some philosophies the SP isnt mentioned as a chakra at all, in others the dantien isnt named. What do you think about that? lgn

Very intersting Nanni. I've never heard it called Dantien/Hara, but that would make sence because I've heard the root chakra called Muladhara. I have seen misguided informaion as to where it is located also. I've heard it called the Manipura, naval, solar plaxus, and stomach chakra. I usually refer to the colours as ROY-G-BIV. Which is also the light spectrum, as seen in a rainbow. I find it amazing how everything is connected! The solar plexus I've read is our chakra that is connected to the sun, and is where we get our sun energy, which is why I suppose it is yellow, and connected with the element of fire. It is the place where we radiate emotional energy to the rest of the world. So when we are balanced and powerful in that centre, we can approach the world from a strong place, with self-acceptance, and harmony to our surroundings. We have strength also, to deal with negative energies, and attract people who fulfill our desires. The opposite, of course occurs when we are unbalanced and suffer from eating disorders, and problems with digestion. Just thought I'd add a little info. The more the merrier!! Thanks nanni!

Hey nanni thanks again for suggesting the chants too me. I was tossing and turning for a long time unable to sleep. I did some chants and I got vibrations and almost left my body. I think I like these chants better then my regular meditations. I see what you mean not to do the colours with them,. as it is hard to tell with chant goes where. I certainly feel the Ahh in my heart, but the rest I kind of difficult. But these chants, especially the OM, really put me out. Gave me such a strong tingle. It did take awile for me to relax my neck though, you are right not to push the sound out, but let it flow naturally out with your breath. Thanks again!

didnt see your last reply.. hey thats great you appreciate the OM chanting and wow almost left your body..hui yeah.. And yes for me too the calming effect of chanting is the best, I do it like 20 min and then sit in silence, which for me after chanting is much easier. Also while chanting I often get up several times to write down certain things which have come to my mind, so my mind is free again and doesnt need to try to keep things in mind. So for me chanting not only is good for meditation-intro but also for to remember things I tend to forget, they easily come to the surface quite fast at the beginning of the chant-medi. Thanks to you too. lg nani

Your very welcome ronnie, I find it amazing! Here is some info explaining the metaphisics behind it. When doing Om chanting or other mantras, it is possible to activate various chakras. By chanting at varying pitches, you will make different tissues in the body vibrate, thus stimulating the nerve centers and the glandular centers, and activating the chakras associated with them. With a bit of experimentation, you will find which tones or pitches vibrate which parts of the body and which chakras. When this has been ascertained, then chant with full force while meditating in the chakra you wish to activate. The sound waves create vibration patterns in the etheric, astral and mental atmosphere, which you can develop the ability to see. They are multicolored and very intricate and beautiful, sometimes forming geometrical patterns and mandalas made out of threads of light. Music will have a similar effect. Just listen to the music during a session while observing the inner light through the Agna Chakra or Third Eye Center. Then watch the color patterns change and develop with the music. Classical music and Indian ragas are especially good for this purpose. Doing this on psychodelics enhances the effect.
