I) Who we are : Core Numbers, Karma lessons, Maturity Numbers.
The 5 main Numbers in a Numerological charts, the ones describing important characteristics of a Person are called the Core Numbers. They are the Life Path, Expression, Birthday, Heart's Desire and Personality Numbers. This is the most commonly used terminology, I'll give alternative ones below for when you'll stumble across them while browsing numerology sites.
I'll add to this Chapter the Maturity Number, of least influence as well as a letter chart called the Karma lessons. It's often overlooked being simply mentioned sometimes and quite far from the Core Numbers while they act as potent fine tuners.
For now, I'll just refer you to the definitions we came up with together for every number from 1 to 9 and 11, 22, 33 as well as 13, 14, 16, 19 and will let you ponder on the traits it can display when applied to each Core Number you'll calculate.
So here's what the first part of our Numerological chart will look like :
Life Path:
Expression:
Heart's Desire:
Personality:
Birthday :
Maturity:
Number.... : 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8 - 9
Average.... : 3 – 1 – 2 – 1 – 4 – 2 – 1 – 1 - 3
Occurrence :
Now, let's recall the Letter/Number association chart so we can process examples after defining the various Numbers above mentioned
1=>a,j,s
2=>b,k,t
3=>c,l,u
4=>d,m,v
5=>e,n,w
6=>f,o,x
7=>g,p,y
8=>h,q,z
9=>i,r
Life Path Number (aka Destiny)
It's calculated by adding all the digits of the date of birth and expresses what we're supposed to become in this life, the types of experiences we'll attract to help us learn the lessons associated with it.
The most common method employed is to reduce the day, month and year separately and reduce the sum of the 3 numbers we've obtained.
Reminder : reducing consists in adding the digits as many times as necessary until we obtain a single digit number. The exceptions are 11, 22 and 33 which are to be left as such.
Here is an example of Life Path calculation for 12/29/1973 :
First, we reduce the month, day and year separately :
12 -> 1+2 > 3
29 -> 11 (not reduced)
1973 -> 1+9+7+3 -> 20 -> 2+0 -> 2
Now, we reduce the sum of these 3 numbers :
3 + 11 + 2 -> 16 - > 1 + 6 > 7
We then have a 7 Life path which, now we have studied the meaning of numbers in depth, tells us right away of someone who has to chosen to become a Seeker as described in thread L2 . And we also notice it comes from a Karmic 16.
Now, there are 2 alternative methods for calculating the Life Path. They can be used to double check 2, 4, or 6 aren't a hidden Master Number.
The second method adds all the digits of the date of birth before reducing (d+d+m+m+y+y+y+y) and the third sums the day and month to the year before reducing. (dd+mm+yyyy)
For example, with the first method, I'll let you check 10/28/1955 has a 4 Life path.
While the second gives :
1+0+2+8+1+9+5+5 -> 31, so it's still a 4
While with the third, we obtain :
10+28+1955 = 1993 -> 1+9+9+3 ->22
This time a master number appears with the 3rd method but it could be with the second or first in another case.
Now, why pick 22 over the two 4's? Some authors tend to look down on the alternative formulas for various, some would say dogmatic reasons. I still use them as real life people's charts have made me think a Master number prevail over the reduced version from the other methods. As an illustration, the Date of Birth was that of Bill Gates. And his building Microsoft from scratch and making it the Monster it is today sounds a lot like a 22 thing to me.
Birthday Number
This one is one of the most simple to get as it's the reduction of the day of birth. It's said to describe special talents we possess that are meant to help us in our Life Path. As a result, it's often an interesting indication for those looking for clues into such things as career choice.
In the previous case, with Sir Bill being born on a 28, we have : 2+8 > 1
In his case, we do have the pioneering approach of the 1 expressed throughout his career.
Expression Number (aka Destiny, again)
It's the first Number derived from the name. And like for the others, we need to process the full name as written on the Birth Certificate. It's usually a middle name in addition to the first and last names. For married women, use the maiden's name.
The Expression Number stands for who we are and sums up all of the qualities we were born with. It's pretty similar to the life path in that our experiences shape it throughout all our life. One is who we are, the other who we're supposed to become. The difference is so thin that some authors swap their meaning. I picked the Life Path as what we're supposed to become because I personally felt the influence of Fate more vivid in this one but it's still a personal choice. And it's not due to the name because those who chose otherwise tend to call the Expression number the Destiny number
To calculate the Expression Number, the most commonly used Method is the reduce the first, middle, and last name separately, and reduce the sum. Example :
Jane Cindy Miller
Jane => 1155 -> 12 -> 3
Cindy => 39547 -> 28 -> 10 -> 1
Miller => 493359 -> 33
Now, we add the 3 numbers : 3 + 1 + 33 => 37 -> 10 -> 1
Like with the Life Path Number, there's an alternative method one may want to use for double-checking for Master numbers, it's the addition and reduction of all the names together.
In the previous case, it would be 1+1+5+5+3+9+5+4+7+4+9+3+3+5+9 -> 73 -> 10 -> 1
Heart's Desire (aka Soul Urge)
It's calculated the same way as the Expression Number, but only with the vowels. As the name hints it, it tells about our Passions and Desires, our Drives.
There's a little trick here because Numerology originally being based on vibrations/sounds, W and Y may be either consonants or vowels depending on the type of sound they produce.
For example, Y in "Brandy" will be considered a vowel and a consonant in "Yellow". The same way, W will be a vowel in Andrew and a consonant in William.
Jane => 1+5 -> 6
Cindy => 9+7 -> 16 -> 7
Miller => 9 + 5 -> 14 -> 5
So the Heart's Desire is 6 + 7 + 5 - > 18 -> 9
Personality Number
Since we have the consonants left, we'll use them to process this one. The Personality Number describes how people see us or how we interact with them.
Jane => 1+5 -> 6 -> 3
Cindy => 3+5+4 -> 12 -> 3
Miller => 4+3+3+9 -> 19 -> 1+9 -> 10 -> 1
Maturity Number
It's kind of a bonus number that gives an indication of what the addtition of our Birth qualities and the ones will learn through Life will make us tend to as we age. It's influence is said not to be felt before the 30's.
It's calculated by adding the Life Path and Expression Number.
Karma Lessons
The blending of the 5 Core Numbers we've seen tell us about the big whole self and the major types of lessons we've chosen to learn in this life, but we still are affected by the influence of every number by the way they are represented in our name. When compared with values based on something close to statistical average, they show if the energy of the number is either lacking, balanced or strong. This will help us fine tune the whole chart.
Supposing Jane was born on the same day as Bill Gates, we'd get the following chart :
Life Path : 22/4
Expression : 1
Heart's Desire : 9
Personality : 1
Birthday : 1
Maturity : 5
Then we simply count how many times we have each number in her name (1155 39547 493359) to fill the Karma lesson chart :
Number..... : 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8 – 9
"Average".. : 3 – 1 – 2 – 1 – 4 – 2 – 1 – 1 – 3
Occurrence : 2 – 0 – 3 – 2 – 4 – 0 – 1 – 0 – 3
When a number is below the "average", it means an extra lesson to learn, when balanced, no problem, and when it's above the "average", it signals an energy the person can tap in but warns to be careful not to fall into excess.
I won't get further for now as this lesson is just meant to deal with calculations. We'll study later how the different parts of the chart interact with each other.

So the Heart's Desire is 6 + 7 + 5 - > 18 -> 9
Personality Number
Since we have the consonants left, we'll use them to process this one. The Personality Number describes how people see us or how we interact with them.
Jane => 1+5 -> 6 -> 3
Cindy => 3+5+4 -> 12 -> 3
