hi everyone, I have been thinking for a while that I want to read tarot for a living, however I just don't know how to get started with this. I have talked to andin about this already and she gave me some ideas,..thanks andin! but I am still unsure of how to start this already! does anyone have any ideas?? I don't know if I want to read out of my home thats the hard part, Im not sure where I can read for others.... there are two psychic shops down the street from me lol but they take all your money!! beleive me they do, also you must meet their requirments to read at their buisnesses, so Im wondering how I should do this.. thank you!

Well what are some options you have thought of? Obviously there is reading out of your house, but what are you other options? The ideal thing is to be able to have your own shop. You know to keep your work and private life seperate. Not only that it will allow you to step out of the "home" mindset. I don't know if I'm making any sense here lol. Of course your own shop would mean making a larger investment in this venture. How about start off at home then once you can afford it (assuming that is a concern) you can expand.
I myself am a rather paranoid person at times and I don't much trust the idea of running a business, that requires people coming to you, from my "safe zone". There are a lot of strange messed up people out there and that just gives those people a way "in". Yes I did say I am paranoid at times. But you have to think about yourself and your safety. If you live in an area where that isn't a problem then go for it. Also if you are able to somehow close off an area of your house to use for this then that's even better. I guess you could ask the cards, once you have options you can ask which is the best solution.

You're very welcome, Lilac! Here are some of the ideas I have (some we may have already talked about and some new):
1) As Anise said, start out in your own home (if you feel safe enough about that) and then move into your own shop as you can afford it
2) Work for someone else's shop (as you said not likely since you would basically be paying them for your work)
3) Advertise for readings at parties (any kind...bachelorette showers, baby showers, birthday parties--adults, etc.). Though this will make them think of it more as a novelty...it is a good way to get many people to see what you can do in a short amount of time perhaps even bringing in repeat business or referals.
4) Go to Ren Fairs or any other specialty fairs/exhibits as a vendor of your tarot services. This would also be another good way to see a lot of people in a short amount of time...depending on the type of event you could either do readings for a fee or you could provide a free demonstration...all while handing out your business card for call backs and referals.
5) If you want to do single readings on people (or as your business grows), but you still don't feel comfortable doing them in your own home or still cannot afford your own shop, then advertise to do them at their homes/businesses, etc. Don't stick with just advertising to individuals either...check out businesses that may want to hire you for tarot readings for special events also.
That's all I have for right now...I'll let you know if I think of anything else.

thanks gals, and ya know Im a bit concerned about doing them out of my home, Ive thought about doing them in my backyard on my deck but ya know all it takes is one weirdo to know where I live lol..so Im kind of leaning against that idea. I would like to do it out in public but I can't afford my own shop otherwise that would be the best way I think.. but I could start by making buisness cards and at least getting my name out there a bit, Im not sure if I want to read at the seekers homes either..hmm, Im not sure really, I guess that is why I asked lol I do think that doing fairs or psychic fairs would be cool, we have them alot in this area, that would get me going in the right direction I think Im just not sure where to plant my buisness, and I would rather not work for anyone..hmm, thanks again for the help, I will consult the cards to see what they have to say. I may even ask my dreams on this.

Hey Lilacsky I professionally read Palms and the Runes, hoping one day to incorporate the Tarot. I have been running from my own home and doing the Body Mind Soul expos when they come up every year twice a year. I have thought of going into a shop down the road but only a thought at the moment. I did (past tense have a spare room i set up for readings) Being also paranoid. I have built on Word of mouth through friends and family, and also the local spiritual shops i put my business card in. I havent had many bites from there but a enough to warrant putting them in. I also have my cards in a beautiful dress shop, All the Gypsy type clothes sold in there with so many wonderful beads, I get lost for ages. My cards are also on display there, I have offered Free readings to all staff that work there, and it gives me practice on my Tarot. So they know what to expect and what to say to customers enquiring.. Aromatherapy and New age book shops are really good to read from. I live in a small City if you can call it a city, so do not have very many options, so found the local spiritual church a good information source and also advertising board. I do not attend only when i want something. They dont mind a bit Good Luck I think you'll do great !! Dancing Bear

I like Andin's suggestion about the parties and the REN fairs. I love going to ren fairs and tarot readings are a big part of them. You will be outside, there will be lots of people, and you get to dress up... how fun is that. But they only come around once in a while (at least around here) so you would want something more regular too. I think parties is a good start, yes people may think of it as novelty but once they get an awesome reading they may come back for follow ups. Of course you must give your business card to everyone you read. Get your name out there and everything will fall into place.

What are ren fairs??? I'm from oz, I have never heard of them, is it a unique thing in your part of the world?? Might be a good idea to try start one up here! Intrigued! Dancing Bear we have ordinary boot sales over here where people sell their goods (2nd hand) and sometimes new. They are held both days over weekends, i have occasionally seen readers set up stall. Which once known people , seek you and know where you will be every week. Great way to start up regular clients. My part of the world is probably completely different to yours so please ignore me if i dont make any sense your end I have never had a weirdo, come to my home.(not to say there arent any here) But am always aware. If i dont like the sounds of someone over the phone, I am fully booked for the next two years. I only also give my mobile number. I ask questions on the phone before i pencil them in. Their name and number ( i ring the number by accident the next day just to make sure) especially on new clients,Ask what type of reading are they looking for.( runes or Palm) they 9/10 start yacking away about the questions they want to ask and giving you some of their history. I am always very professional as in i stand back and evaluate the entire situation before i book them in. Ultimately I would love to work from a shop but i have too many other commitments going on to do that. See over here readers read from already established shops and hand over 5-10% of takings. we have only one person who read from his own shop. because i dont really want to build the business up too much (babies to look after) I do alot of weekend work when hubbys home to look after children. Only occasionally do i allow someone to come around through the week. ( These people are trusted old clients). I do need to set up a separate office area off of the house, for i will be setting up another business in september, So will probably read from there also.( we do not have a problem with too much, this neck of the woods, so feel relatively safe) I couldn't do it day in day out though 3,4,5 some even do between 10-20 clients a day . I tend to absorb peoples energy too much!! so become zapped I'm a sponge LOL(working on it).I take my hat off to those who can do it day in day out! I reckon slowly worm your way into the market in your spare time at markets or whatever they are called your way, see how you go and play by ear from there. But thats only me, ultimately its all up to you and what you are looking at for the future. And also it is a different part of the world here, i imagine you have a hell of a lot more people where you are, We'd be lucky to have 70,000 people in an area larger than England put together. I Wish you all the Luck in the World Lilacsky. I beleive you will do really well! ( said that before didnt i LOL) DB xx
