I've had alot of questions about empathy lately, and it led me to a few interesting things about it. I was wondering if empathy was a psychic ability for awhile now and I discovered that it is not a psychic ability untill you learn to control it. Highly sensitive people (HSP) often have a very hard time coping and sorting with the feelings they are picking up. Clairsentience is the controlled psychic ability of sensing feelings, and having heightened senses.
Science of Empathy Interestingly, in a Science Now program that aired Jan. 25, 2005 on the PBS series Nova, the recent identification of “mirror neurons” was presented. These neurons fire when we move or emote, or see someone else moving or emoting. They can’t tell the difference between us taking action and someone else taking action, which means that we have the experience of doing it ourselves even if we’re just watching. Have you ever watched people dancing, skating, playing sports, or being emotional, and felt as if you were moving or crying yourself? These neurons mean we are capable of feeling motion and emotions even if we haven’t had a first-hand experience of them ourselves. Further, Nova’s research indicates that we are more likely to resonate with those we’ve already experienced.
I found that pretty interesting.

OH what a wonderful topic. I take on the worlds problems and it's draining. I can feel everything that people are feeling and try to turn it off, but it doesn't turn off. I was telling someone this a few months back that I can walk down a typical street in Manhattan and feel everything the people are feeling. Some days it's stronger and other days it's weaker or maybe I'm just not in tune. It happens every day when I'm on the train. Could we just be reading the persons face? I just read someone to the T when they sent me their picture before. I spoke about their personality traits. Yes, coping and sorting these feelings can be very difficult. It's like contagious laughter or love, it spreads itself around, but this is a bit different than what you're writing about.

Oh empathy...err. Yes I know what you mean astralanchor. I don't believe it is just reading the face. Even when a car drives by I can get a rush or a wave of feeling. oh geesh, and going into a crowd...err. I can't watch TV at all either it makes me upset or agitated. There are coping groups even, that help HSP's deal with, and use the abilities. I think contagious laughter is a good example of the mirror neurons working, not just bad feelings but excitement, joy, pleasure etc. I think empaths would make excellent healers, but ohhhh the weight of other's is often far too much to hold.

That's why I never decided to go into psychology/psychiatry. A guidance counselor told me in high school it wouldn't be a good choice for me because I would bring their problems home with me. I see a lot more people than people in low populated areas around the world. I heard there's 750,000 people here at night and 4-5 million during the day in New York City, so there's a lot of emotion going on here. I tell people I can feel when the city is calm and when it's not. Sundays' really are quiet in the city and now that the fall is here, we will have less tourist on the streets. That can be felt by me. I can tell when the city is more aggressive or happier. Now that's as a whole. It's so interesting. Very interesting topic Sir Incubus.

I think everyone has epathy and are psychic these things go together, when I do tarot readings, I feel what the person is feeling and I don't need to see them I usually just sit for a moment with them..I think the emotions are the result of psychic abilities, afterall it is through the emotions we can relate most with others.. to me its the same thing, because without empathy I would not have understanding nor the ability to walk in someone elses shoes..and it is understanding that gives me the ability to read people.

My biggest problem is when there are disasters such as the recent hurricanes that are constantly on TV. I usually leave the news off during the day because I know my husband will put on CNN as soon as he gets home. As soon as he does I immediately get tense. I still like to follow the news, but in short spurts...usually on the internet. It makes it easier for me because I can read the news and stories without hearing the tension and emotions in other people's voices and turn it off when I have had enough. I have also learned to sometimes disconnect myself from other people's problems/issues. It sometimes makes me seem like a cold-harded and uncaring person, but I have to protect myself.

yeah andin, I think we all need to severe our sevles from those terrible things that happen, and ya know it can be very draining to have such negative energy around all the time, so I tend not to watch the news ever..I have enough crap to deal with on my own plate ya know..I just can't stand to hear more bad stuff going on to other people..

I know exactly what you mean by feeling the 'air' of the city. It's like the rush of Devil's night, or the feeling of Christmas eve are very intense examples. They say an empathic person will, if they work on it, develop into feeling objects, reading minds, and many other abilities. They say the most sensitive people are the most psychic people. It seems like controlling empathy is like a gate-way to opening your psychic abilities. This year I've done alot of testing with projecting feelings outward and 'scanning' people. I noticed alot of people can feel when they are being scanned, and immediatly will look over in the direction of me, even if I'm well hidden. I can also seem to 'feel' if someone is around or watching. It's crazy because I've been using empathic abilities my whole life and never had a name for it, and now it seems like everything ties into it, and it should have been obvious. I also find that people are drawn to empathics, and will start spilling problems out on you, or tapping your energy. Sometimes I don't understand how some people can 'not feel' these things in the world. Crazyness. Anyways...

Sometimes I don't understand how some people can 'not feel' these things. I think that everyone has these feelings, but either doesn't recognize it as anything other than "instincts" or they just ignore it completely (where they eventually lose it all together--don't use it you lose it). Just my humble opinion.

Thank you for that link. I wonder if something like that would also work for my 7-year-old son, whom we believe to be an Indigo child.
