Since I was... 5 years old, I have always "played" a story in my mind. I created a fantasy universe that I could retreat to whenever I was bored or just looking to daydream. My dreams are usually related to something that I have thought about or seen a few days or even a few months before the dream, but I've never had a dream about the fantasy that I like to play out in my daydreams.
Why would I not dream about this daydream?

I see it as this, Why would you need to night dream about it (your fantasy world) when you already Day dream about it? Playing stories in your mind as a child is also a form of meditation,, somewhere to go where you feel safe, soemwhere you are not bored, something to keep you occupied I use to do the same.. it was my escape, I never have dreamt it either.. To be honest i have no scientific or spiritual answer for you... Other than the above..

Well favorite, do you want to have a dream based on the fantasy? Then what you could try is to tell yourself before sleep and while drifting off, is that you want a dream about the fantasy. It might help to be specific too, a dream about one of the characters or settings.
My theory to why you haven't dreamed about the fantasy could be you don't have an "issue" with it, there isn't anything in the fantasy that your subconscious needs to work out---no conflict that requires your attention and no problem that is plaguing your subconscious. You may also have worked out some issues within the fantasy itself.
You may have had elements of the fantasy in your dreams but may not have remembered them or did not recognize the symbolism of it.

I think that both of your suggestions are accurate.
