BRAHM DHYAN
A Simply Powerful Meditation of Brahman-Atman Yoga
1. Do not practice this technique with a full stomach, or while under the influence of any intoxicant.
2. Always wear loose clothing or, when it's warm enough, undergarments only. Have bare feet.
3. While meditating forget the body altogether, don't be obsessed with your posture or in trying to look like an "advanced" meditator. A perfectly erect posture isn't really necessary. If it is, then no hunchback will ever become enlightened. Transformations are mental, emotional and spiritual, not so much on the physical. Any flaw on your posture will eventually be corrected by the movement of prana.
4. If you encounter certain hassles (like if you suddenly felt an itch, as in the case of insect bites, or the need to go to the restroom) then pause for a while and do what is necessary, then return to your practice. If while practicing you suddenly felt sleepy, then by all means hold your practice right there and sleep.
5. Be careful not to alter any of the techniques here given, nor break their sequence. This method has already been proven by direct experience. Any form of tampering may lessen its potency, or may render the whole thing nil.
1. Set your alarm clock to thirty minutes and sit cross-legged on the floor. It would be better if you're sitting on some thick covering. If you don't have a tigerskin or deerskin mat, just use a woolen blanket and fold it a few times. Then put a silk cloth on top. This would help neutralize subtle currents that pull life-energy down.
2. Now, the first is relaxation. Your body and mind must be very relaxed, just awake enough to maintain the sitting position. To do this, close the eyes gently and inhale slowly through the nose while tensing your body (clench your fists and bend your toes as you do so). When the lungs are already filled, hold the breath for a few seconds. Then slowly relax your body while you exhale through the mouth (opening the hands and straightening the toes). You will see that this sort of tension and relaxation is very soothing and has a calming effect. Do it four times.
3. The next step is interiorization. What we are going to do is try to disconnect the senses from their objects. Clench your right hand into a loose fist, do this almost without effort. Now, listen to the loudest sound you can hear, for example, children shouting in play. Elimate that sound from your mind. You eliminate it in the sense that you still hear it, but you pay no attention, it just becomes part of the silence. Stretch your little finger and count that as one. Then, listen to the second loudest sound, for example, the neighbor's radio. Eliminate that sound from your mind. Stretch your ring finger and count that as two. Just continue on eliminating the sounds until your ears rest in the inner silence. You will notice that all the other senses have been subdued as well.
4. Then we come to concentration, you will need to focus on something in order to nail the mind and set it aside. It is difficult to grab hold of the mind when it's like a restless monkey hopping from one branch of thought to the other. So what we will do is use a mantra or a power word. Mantra came from the Sanskrit man "mind and tra "to go beyond." Mantras have been used by Sages in India, China, Egypt and Israel for thousands of years. It is quite simpe and very effective. The particular mantra that we are going to use is Brahman, it is the oldest name for God. It means "One Great Power." We will use a name of God as our mantra so that you will always be conscious of the real purpose of meditation which is oneness with God. So, to do this, focus your gaze very far forward, like six or seven blocks away in the darkness of closed eyes. Neither up nor down, just straight ahead.
4.1 Become conscious of your breathing. Feel the in-breath and out-breath, and be conscious of the point where they break. Don't control the natural breath rhythm, just be aware. You will begin to feel very light.
4.2 Now, as your lungs naturally draw breath, whisper softly in your mind "maaaan" up to the point where the breath breaks. Wait for your lungs to natural expel air, and as you exhale, whisper softly in your mind "braaaah" until the point where it breaks. Then do it again. This is a cycle of continuous chanting as you breathe naturally in and out. You will feel as if your head is getting bigger and bigger.
4.3 Do this until the alarm on your clock goes off. Don't use a clock with an annoyingly loud ringing alarm. Get something softer. Also, don't use a clock that tic-tacs like a time bomb. Get a digital.
5. When you hear the alarm, do not open your eyes straight away. Give thanks to God and your mentor(s) in the Path. Then, gently open your
eyes.
