I shall be starting the experiment again soon (which will hopefully be seen through to completion this time.)
This is really more of a note to myself to see if any of my preconceptions change as i go along with a group discussing ideas and things.
DON JUAN
I've read the book a couple of times and have been very absorbed by it's saying and teachings. They not only take the mind in every which directions but also fold it in on itself, opening windows that have always been there just not peeked through never mind thrown open.
Some of his stories seem to be in the realms of fantasy/madness but it is his reasons and conclusions that bring it all together. It's almost as if he's telling fables.
As to whether or not he's real - well... there's a big part of me that believes he is fictional. Made up in a moment of genius on Castaneda's part to help portray his ideas in the form of his own spiritual quests or travels. The fact that he can't be traced helped me arrive to that conclusion too but i would be lying if i didn't say it would be great if he was real and was just working under his own principles of being unattainable. Being untraceable would stand to reason that of course the man has no history. Either way the fact that he can't be found does lend a certain 'mystic' to the whole thing that can't be denied.
If he were alive in this day and age whether he'd be called a prophet or a nut remains to be seen. Mind you madness is just another way of looking at reality.
CARLOS CASTANEDA
Is a talented and gifted writer. His journey of spiritual awaking is written in such a manner that from beginning to end your hooked. His words weave a web that pulls you in and ensnares you. It is of little wonder that the book can influence your dreams.
If it was written as a book of instruction/guided work book it would not have the power it now contains. The very fact he is 'normal' and at times chokingly full of human error/nature it makes the book easier to relate to. Personally I'm glad he stated he was scared or even at one stage tried to back out of the whole thing. It's something on a personal level i can understand.
THE TEACHINGS
I suppose if i was to put into a nut shell it would be 'look harder!' It's amazing how much are eyes are shut to even when there open, 'eyes wide shut' i guess you'd call it.
That's all I'm going to write for now. Could probably go on for several pages but think it would be better to go through chapter by chapter with the group. So mainly just dreams from now on.
Pain in the bum though coz my dream recall has dropped to an all time low!
