I finally experimented with a supplement called galantamine this morning. I read about it in a book called "Advanced Lucid Dreaming- The Power of Supplements" and purchased it from an online vendor quite awhile ago and finally tried it. It wasn't a planned thing either. I went to bed about 2am and woke at 7am to use the bathroom. I decided to do the wake back to sleep method since that's always been such a great technique to achieve lucid dreams. I went for a walk and about 45 minutes later I'm about to lie back down and remember that I've been meaning to try this supplement. I take one capsule which is 8mg (the suggested dose is 4-8mg, the author states he takes 8mg). The book suggests to use the supplement after you've slept for about 4 or 5 hours for best results but doesn't mention coupling it with the wake back to sleep method. Instead the author just says to wake, take the supplement, and lie right back down to sleep.
I take the 8mg capsule and lie back down, with a bit of anticipation knowing that from what I've read that I'm about to be experiencing some high level vivid lucid dreams. The one thing that's amazing about this supplement is that it makes it much easier to W.I.L.D. right into a dream. Meaning go from an awake state directly into a dream without losing consciousness.
First of all, this is only one experience. I plan to use it again soon to see how the next one goes. But... The following 2 hours after taking this supplement, I experienced the most vivid and high level lucid dreams than I've experienced in years! No joke!
It may had taken about 10 minutes to fall back to sleep and though I didn't go straight from awake into a lucid dream, the falling to sleep process felt a bit different... Hard to explain. I should mention here as well that the effects of the supplement are fast. It peaks at one hour, so within minutes of taking it, it's already effecting you. And then after the 1 hour mark it gradually begins to wear off. However it has a half life of like 2 days I believe to leave your system. So if you do find this supplement to be useful, then you may only want to take it a couple times a week with some days between so not to build up a tolerance to it. So back to the experience. I'm only writing part of it because there's just too much to record here.
I awaken in a bed from an older bother bugging me. The house isn't familiar to me though the set up looks just like my apartment. There's quite a few people here and i walk outside and immediately become lucid. There's a family walking (actually they're damn near skipping or dancing down the street they're all in such a great mood) down the street with huge smiles on their faces. I get the sense that it's sometime in the 1980's. They seem a bit fuzzy meaning my dream clarity isn't at its best. I join the family and it doesn't take long before the clarity is crystal clear. Eventually one of the family members just disappears into the ground and I realize there's got to be a portal there and I dive head first right into the ground. I get stuck. Half of my body is still in this scene and the other half is in the portal. I can see a blackness with swirling lights. This eventually becomes just pure darkness and without losing awareness I end up in what I like to call the void.
It's not sleep paralysis, but just a pure level of consciousness. No body, no visuals, just awareness. After a bit of time I notice the blackness beginning to take form and shape and i see a figure take shape and he turns to me and motions for me to follow. I know now I can re-enter into the dream world. I'm walking down the middle of the street with hundreds of people who are all again smiling and just seem so happy. There are no cars. I remember a couple of my lucid dream tasks and approach a lady and ask her where we are. She says New Orleans! (often in lucid dreams, dream characters seem confused when asked this question) I'm like "that's awesome, I've never been to New Orleans before!" I ask her what her name is. She tells me her name (though I can't remember it now)(again often DC's don't know their name when asked) We walk continuing to converse though now I can't remember most of it and eventually the dreamscape begins to falter and begin to disintegrate around me. This lady tells me to just keep my awareness during the transition. I can still hear her voice as everything goes black and again I keep lucidity into the void.
I wait patiently for visuals of a new dreamscape to begin to materialize. As it does piece by piece I become part of the scene. I'm in a big parking lot and again with a lot of people around. I decide to do some flying. This LD lasts quite awhile and it's just too much to write but the end is very interesting. I end up entering a building that is mid evil style and the people here are dressed in armor and the such. I end up battling someone in this castle like building but only moments into the battle I'm filled with an awareness like we shouldn't be battling. As soon as I stop. The person I'm battling stops. I tell him I'm from another world (OTHER WORLDS!) And he says "I know". I tell him that it's so weird because I know that this is just a dream but this place really feels like I'm visiting a "real" place. He grins at me and says something along the lines of "you have much to learn, follow me, I'd like to show you something". I following him down a hall which leads to a door. He's just about to open it and I feel like I'm about to learn some great big secret but I hear a faint alarm sounding in the distance. In my dream I know that sound. It's the alarm on my phone (in the waking world) and I try to put it out of my head and stay with the dream. But I can't and I wake up. However there is no alarm going off!
I awake with a sense of pure joy. I just spent more than an hour in multiple lucid dreams, never losing lucidity that I can remember! It's been quite some time since I've had this level of maintained awareness and clarity in my dreams. Not only that but many of my LD's over the last while have been sort of boring often lacking of dream characters. Just a dreamscape with no DC's at all. I know that this supplement is what helped propel this dreaming session. I'm looking forward to another experience with it. I plan to take it no more than 2 times a week so to not build a tolerance though most likely I'll probably end up taking it only a couple times a month. Hell I've had it probably for like a year now and finally got around to trying it. I did feel slightly dizzy during the first couple of hours after I awoke, which was mentioned as a side effect in the book. But the slight after effects are well worth such an epic dreaming session!
